What your eyes say about you?

It’s true. Your eyes say a lot about you. They eyes are the first thing people notice almost all the time, and it reveals many of our secrets. For example, when you are tired it shows in your eyes and when people see you they say “you look tired”.

Let’s talk about some of the “looks” of your eyes and what they mean.

Dark halos around the eye – Dark circles, mostly in the lower eye lids but sometimes in the upper eyelids. This discolouration gives the tired and sometimes even the sick look.

What causes this?

There are many different things that could cause this;

  • Sometimes it is caused by genetics. Some families have these dark circles under their eyes and it runs through generations. It is simply how the pigmentation is distributed through the skin.
  • Sometimes it is the lack of sleep or even the poor sleep quality.

During the sleeping cycle, the cells in your body regenerate and get their nourishments. The disturbance of sleep causes stress on the body and it is reflected on the skin, especially near the eyes because of the delicacy.

  • Anemia: Low haemoglobin causing low iron levels.
  • Smoking: Produces free radicals and affects the small blood vessels and blood circulation.
  • Poor circulation and low oxygen. The dark colour is reflected under the eye lids, at the same time some pigments from the blood leak and remain in the skin.
  • Irritation of the skin. Due to skin care products and/or cosmetics; this results in pigmentation.
  • Dryness of the skin gives the skin a darker shade.

So, what’s the solution?

  1. Good sleep quality. Maintain a healthy sleeping cycle and get 8 hours of sleep every night.
  2. Drinking 6-8 glasses of water daily and staying hydrated.
  3. Check your haemoglobin and iron levels with your physician.
  4. Avoid irritants and allergens.

Natural remedy for dark circles!

  1. Chamomile Essential Oil – 5 drops.
  2. Lavender Essential Oil – 5 drops.
  3. Carrot Seed Essential Oil – 5 drops.
  4. Apricot Kernel Oil – 60 drops.

Mix these essential oils into a container and apply one drop of the mixed solution onto each eye lid (with the dark circle) and gently dap until it’s absorbed in your skin. Do this every night before going to sleep!

Puffed eye bags (swollen eye bags)

Puffed eye bags gives you an older look, and becomes more obvious in the morning.

What causes this?

  • Wrong positioning of the head during sleep.
  • Low intake of proteins.
  • Imbalance of electrolytes (e.g. Sodium, Na).
  • Kidney problems which leads to water retention in the whole body.

So, what’s the solution?

  1. While going to sleep, position your head to be above the body level.
  2. Don’t sleep with the pillow on your face; this compresses the eyes causing it to retain water.
  3. The everyday intake of proteins, especially with every meal.

Natural remedy for swollen eye bags

  1. Use cucumber slices! Place one slice on each eye and lie down on your back and relax for 20 minutes.
  2. Use tea bags! Soak two tea bags in cold water for one minute. Long enough for the tea bags to be damped but without any of the tea seeping through and into the water. Apply one tea bag on each eye for 10-20 minutes.

Note this! When these eye bags are present all the time and have a doughy feeling, this means these eye bags contain fat and NOT water. This tends to happen with aging since the tissue that maintains the fat lining the eye sockets becomes weak. This allows the fat to bulge under the skin. Usually needs surgical interference for cosmetic appearance.

Wrinkles around the eye

There are 2 kinds of wrinkles:

  1. Wrinkles associated with smiling (dynamic wrinkles). These wrinkles are normal, and can even be seen in children when they’re laughing.
  2. Wrinkles that are always present (static wrinkles). The dynamic wrinkles become persistent with time especially when the skin is dry or stiff due to photo (light) damage, and the loss of the soft lining tissue that happens with aging.

So, what’s the solution?

  1. Natural ways!
  • Cosmetic acupressure. Use your fingertips to press and massage specific points on the face (forehead, lateral corner of the eye, and cheeks). This causes stimulation of the muscles and improves the circulation and lymphatic drainage. Helps with the rejuvenation of the skin.
  • Eat food that is rich in anti-oxidants such as red grapes and blueberries.

Natural remedy for wrinkles!

  1. Sandalwood Essential Oil – 5 drops.
  2. Geranium Essential Oil – 5 drops.
  3. Lavender Essential Oil – 5 drops.
  4. Frankincense Essential Oil – 5 drops.
  5. Carrot Root oil – 5 drops.
  6. Pomegranate oil – 5 drops.
  7. Apricot Kernel oil – 5 drops.

Mix these essential oils into a container and apply two drops of the mixed solution onto the wrinkles and gently massage until it’s absorbed in your skin. Massaging helps with the circulation of the blood in that area and helps with the mixture’s absorption. Do this every morning and evening!

Drooping of the upper lid and the laxity of the lower lid.

Lower lid

If you pull the skin under your eye and it doesn’t go back to its original position but instead becomes wrinkled as if there is excess skin, this means the skin is lax and has lost its elasticity.

What causes this?

  1. Aging, thinning of the skin, and the decrease in elastin (which is responsible for the elasticity of the skin).
  2. Prolonged use of incorrect massage to the area makes the drooping faster.

Upper lid

The exact same situation as the lower eye lid.

Sometimes it is hanging over the eye and interferes with the vision.

What causes this?

  1. Drooping of the upper eye lid may happen without any cause and could keep drooping until it interferes with vision.
  2. Some diseases like Myasthenia Gravis cause the upper lid to be relaxed and droop that the person has to raise their head in order to be able to see.
  3. The most common cause is aging and loss of the soft tissue on the eyebrow ridge, which holds the upper lid and elevates it.

So, what’s the solution?

  1. The massaging of certain critical points on the forehead to stimulate the frontalis muscle which is responsible for the elevation of the eye brows.

Natural remedy for drooping!

  1. Rose Wood Essential Oil – 5 drops.
  2. Lavender Essential Oil – 5 drops.
  3. Ylang Ylang Essential Oil – 5 drops.
  4. Grapeseed Oil – 15 drops (to prevent irritation of the skin) OR
  5. Apricot Kernel Oil – 15 drops.

These essential oils are good for elasticity. Mix them into a container and apply two drops on the eye lids. Lightly dab and massage to help the absorption of the oils! Apply every morning and evening.
